Ep 03: How to Look and Feel Younger
What if the next chapter of your life is not about slowing down, but about becoming the person God created you to be?
In this episode of the Mind Body Faith Over 50 Podcast, Coach TJ Denison explores the second pillar of the show: the body. This is not about chasing an unrealistic appearance. It is about building the strength, energy, mobility, and health needed to live with purpose after 50.
Your body helps you do the things that matter most: play with your grandchildren, travel, hike, ski, serve others, enjoy your family, and fully participate in the life God has given you. Coach TJ shares a faith-based perspective on healthy aging, nutrition, movement, stewardship, and making choices today that support the life you want to live tomorrow.
In this episode, you will learn:
- Why healthy aging is about function, energy, and purpose, not just appearance
- How taking care of your body can help you stay active after 50
- A biblical perspective on honoring God through physical stewardship
- Why intentional eating matters for long-term health and vitality
- How whole foods, nourishment, self-control, rest, and movement support a healthier lifestyle
- Why you do not need to become an athlete or bodybuilder to improve your health
- How small, consistent movement can help you maintain strength and mobility
- Why the best health goal is often connected to a meaningful moment, person, or experience
- How to think differently about your body as the vehicle for your next chapter
Coach TJ also shares a powerful story about an older man who built strength over time so he could lift his granddaughter to place the angel on top of the Christmas tree. The question is not simply, “How do I look?” It is, “What do I want my body to allow me to do?”
If you are over 50 and want to renew your mind, strengthen your body, deepen your faith, and live with more energy and purpose, this episode is for you.

00:00.151 --> 00:07.118
[SPEAKER_00]: What if the next chapter of your life isn't about slowing down, but about becoming the person you are created to be?
00:08.539 --> 00:10.341
[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, I'm Coach Chijay.
00:11.061 --> 00:14.304
[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the Mindbody Faith of R.50 Podcast.
00:15.826 --> 00:19.309
[SPEAKER_00]: Before we get started, I want to share a next step for some of you.
00:20.550 --> 00:25.395
[SPEAKER_00]: If you know that you need to make a change in your life, but you're not sure how to get started,
00:26.439 --> 00:32.349
[SPEAKER_00]: Go to mbfpodcast.com slash call to schedule a complimentary call with me.
00:33.371 --> 00:36.717
[SPEAKER_00]: That's mbfpodcast.com slash call.
00:38.399 --> 00:40.162
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, now let's get back to the show.
00:42.012 --> 00:50.157
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm really excited about today's episode because I have something to share with you that can truly help you look and feel younger.
00:50.697 --> 01:02.365
[SPEAKER_00]: So in our last episode, we talked about the first of our three pillars for the show, the mind and how what we think can determine the outcome of our lives.
01:03.403 --> 01:12.028
[SPEAKER_00]: So this week, let's expand on the framework for the mind-body faith that we're 50 podcasts, and talk about our next filler, the body.
01:13.669 --> 01:17.271
[SPEAKER_00]: So when you think of your body, what do you think of?
01:18.652 --> 01:21.213
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it just a bunch of parts that work together?
01:22.614 --> 01:27.777
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it one big piece that you control with your mind and your actions?
01:29.393 --> 01:37.276
[SPEAKER_00]: Or do you think of it as this physical appearance that other people see, like when you look in a mirror?
01:38.416 --> 01:41.317
[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe you think of that as who you are.
01:41.617 --> 01:45.198
[SPEAKER_00]: So when you think of your body, what do you think of?
01:46.599 --> 01:49.160
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it just a bunch of parts that work together?
01:50.560 --> 01:55.742
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it one big piece that you control with your mind and your actions?
01:57.358 --> 02:05.241
[SPEAKER_00]: Or do you think of it as this physical appearance that other people see, like when you look in a mirror?
02:06.362 --> 02:15.066
[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe you think of that as who you are, even though in reality, who we are has nothing to do with our physical appearances.
02:15.966 --> 02:19.148
[SPEAKER_00]: I care about my body, because it's the only one I've got.
02:20.428 --> 02:25.250
[SPEAKER_00]: And I know once it starts to wear down, that I'm gonna have a harder time accomplishing
02:28.082 --> 02:29.902
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what I want to talk to you about today.
02:30.643 --> 02:36.124
[SPEAKER_00]: Not just what our bodies look like on the outside, but what our bodies allow us to do.
02:37.604 --> 02:40.225
[SPEAKER_00]: I remember a commercial from a wild bag.
02:40.965 --> 02:47.527
[SPEAKER_00]: It was this guy that was older than me, and he started waking up early in the morning,
02:48.213 --> 03:00.416
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe in the middle of the year, every day he would drag himself out to the grudge and then pull out this heavy weight that he had in there and like practice lifting it except
03:01.285 --> 03:05.988
[SPEAKER_00]: at the beginning of the commercial, you see his neighbor watching what he's doing, right?
03:06.049 --> 03:07.309
[SPEAKER_00]: She's like, what's this guy had to?
03:08.010 --> 03:12.253
[SPEAKER_00]: And he tried to lift this weight, but he was barely able to lift it at all.
03:12.313 --> 03:18.738
[SPEAKER_00]: It was more like he was using it to support himself, just to crotch up and down, you know?
03:19.639 --> 03:23.722
[SPEAKER_00]: But he kept doing it day after day.
03:23.982 --> 03:27.444
[SPEAKER_00]: He would go out to the garage and drag out this weight.
03:31.555 --> 03:41.120
[SPEAKER_00]: And slowly he got to where he could pull it up to his chest, like dead lifted, actually lifted up with the strength of his legs.
03:42.180 --> 03:56.507
[SPEAKER_00]: And then later in the commercial and several weeks or maybe months into his daily routine, he could actually lift the way up to his chest, which was pretty impressive.
03:57.472 --> 04:08.296
[SPEAKER_00]: And then it was neat to see the progression that was probably like I say weeks, if not months, because at the end, he was able to lift the weight all the way above his head.
04:09.536 --> 04:13.157
[SPEAKER_00]: And you're like, well that's cool, but then what's this commercial about?
04:13.398 --> 04:25.922
[SPEAKER_00]: So you see him go into his family's house at Christmas and his granddaughter wanted to put the star or I guess it was an angel on top of the Christmas tree.
04:26.865 --> 04:41.859
[SPEAKER_00]: and he was able to lift her up so that she could put her on top of the tree and he gets this big smile and you realize, that's what he had been working for this whole time just for that one moment because how is such an important moment for him?
04:42.460 --> 04:48.566
[SPEAKER_00]: He wanted to be able to participate in that and he wanted to be able to do that with his granddaughter, right?
04:49.366 --> 04:49.447
[SPEAKER_00]: And
04:50.567 --> 04:53.738
[SPEAKER_00]: Now that I have green kids, man, I get it.
04:53.758 --> 04:57.089
[SPEAKER_00]: I definitely want to continue to be able to.
04:57.968 --> 05:16.041
[SPEAKER_00]: Lift up my grandkids and play with them and not even just now when they're young, but when they get older, I want to be able to go and have adventures with them to go rock climbing and even downhill skiing because I haven't done that in a while.
05:16.862 --> 05:24.767
[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, I would love to move to Colorado and downhill ski a lot more often than I'm able to do.
05:28.057 --> 05:30.759
[SPEAKER_00]: So what is it that you want to accomplish?
05:31.519 --> 05:35.722
[SPEAKER_00]: And what role does how you take care of your body playing that?
05:36.983 --> 05:39.805
[SPEAKER_00]: Because that's the question I want you to think about.
05:41.026 --> 05:45.249
[SPEAKER_00]: What do you want your body to allow you to do?
05:45.649 --> 05:50.872
[SPEAKER_00]: So the Bible doesn't present a modern nutrition and longevity plan.
05:51.713 --> 05:55.836
[SPEAKER_00]: But it does give us a strong biblical framework for caring for our bodies.
05:56.977 --> 06:02.903
[SPEAKER_00]: Especially through what we eat, self-control, stewardship, rest, and purposeful living.
06:04.064 --> 06:10.850
[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, in first Corinthians, the Bible says, your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.
06:11.631 --> 06:14.614
[SPEAKER_00]: You are not your own, you are about for a price.
06:15.395 --> 06:17.697
[SPEAKER_00]: Therefore, honor God with your bodies.
06:18.945 --> 06:28.392
[SPEAKER_00]: Now taking care of your body isn't just about looking better and living longer, it's stewardship and using what guides interested to you.
06:28.632 --> 06:36.378
[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, the Bible says that physical training is of some value, but Godliness has value for all things.
06:37.741 --> 06:41.782
[SPEAKER_00]: holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
06:42.262 --> 06:50.825
[SPEAKER_00]: The biblical diet wasn't based on processed foods, refined sugars or ultra-combine yet meals.
06:51.845 --> 06:57.667
[SPEAKER_00]: Many foods specifically mentioned in the Bible are whole minimally processed foods.
06:58.487 --> 07:03.169
[SPEAKER_00]: The way our bodies were designed for its vegetables,
07:09.495 --> 07:27.442
[SPEAKER_00]: In Daniel, there's an interesting story in the Bible because it talks about him saying to God, please test your servants for 10 days, give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink.
07:30.143 --> 07:37.306
[SPEAKER_00]: After that test before the king, Daniel and his companions appeared healthier than those
07:39.678 --> 07:45.922
[SPEAKER_00]: But that's not to say that the Bible tells us we should just be vegetarian.
07:46.362 --> 08:03.192
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm certainly not, I do think though, that it provides an interesting example of how intentional little eating and choosing nourishment over saying indulgence is meaningful.
08:04.968 --> 08:19.280
[SPEAKER_00]: Basically, we should be taking care of our bodies in a way that can allow us to live and do so with strength, with energy and with purpose.
08:19.540 --> 08:21.982
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's think a little differently now.
08:22.242 --> 08:30.209
[SPEAKER_00]: Instead of just the expression of the outside of your body because we all have a perception of what that looks like on the outside, right?
08:31.717 --> 08:47.681
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk more about health inside because and I'm not just talking about ligaments and bones and blood vessels and that kind of stuff, but I want you to think about the inside of your body in a different way.
08:48.781 --> 08:52.802
[SPEAKER_00]: If you close your eyes and listen if you're driving, don't close your eyes.
08:54.142 --> 08:54.762
[SPEAKER_00]: Didn't say that.
08:55.883 --> 08:57.343
[SPEAKER_00]: Just think with me for a moment.
08:58.245 --> 09:08.771
[SPEAKER_00]: think about the inside of your body because what you do to keep the inside of your body healthy will be shown externally.
09:09.031 --> 09:09.731
[SPEAKER_00]: Does that make sense?
09:10.952 --> 09:22.098
[SPEAKER_00]: In other words, it doesn't do any good to look healthy on the outside if inside your arteries are clogged or hurt some large
09:23.940 --> 09:29.943
[SPEAKER_00]: If you're a guy like me, you know, you might have prostate issues because a lot of us deal with stuff like that.
09:30.923 --> 09:34.805
[SPEAKER_00]: And some of those things admittedly, we can't control, and I get that.
09:35.446 --> 09:44.210
[SPEAKER_00]: But there are a lot of things that we can do and should do, especially as we get over to help our bodies internally to be healthier.
09:45.130 --> 09:49.833
[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, for me, and a lot of listeners who are older than me
09:50.871 --> 10:02.039
[SPEAKER_00]: We probably remembered that more than a generation or two before us that our families were farmers, or at least they had gardens and food naturally, right?
10:02.919 --> 10:04.160
[SPEAKER_00]: And they used that food.
10:04.760 --> 10:10.844
[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes they also used the large families to help harvest that food, but that's a different story.
10:11.885 --> 10:15.808
[SPEAKER_00]: But that food was healthier than what we have today.
10:16.832 --> 10:24.557
[SPEAKER_00]: partly because the soil has been worked so much today with multiple crops having been planted.
10:24.577 --> 10:40.327
[SPEAKER_00]: Then you introduce things like herbicides and pesticides and don't even get me started as a scientist about the studies of the kinds of things that have been found in our bodies as a result of all that.
10:43.058 --> 10:50.522
[SPEAKER_00]: Sadly, there's also the issue of the nutrition and the foods that we buy off the shelves and the stores.
10:51.622 --> 11:03.048
[SPEAKER_00]: Once we've come to depend on that based on the way they're manufactured, they are not nearly as healthy as it used to be, especially here in the US.
11:13.181 --> 11:22.748
[SPEAKER_00]: have your mom bake you bread, but if you were to gone to the store, 23 years ago, it probably had three or four ingredients in it, right?
11:23.869 --> 11:29.233
[SPEAKER_00]: The yeast, flour, what else is in bread, I don't know.
11:29.333 --> 11:33.916
[SPEAKER_00]: They just smell clearly out of like bread, but it'd be suffocated recognized, right?
11:34.257 --> 11:36.018
[SPEAKER_00]: It would be natural ingredients.
11:36.578 --> 11:41.362
[SPEAKER_00]: And now some foods can have 20 or 30 ingredients,
11:42.843 --> 11:50.665
[SPEAKER_00]: angry instead of been restricted or banned in other countries because of concerns about artifacts, right?
11:51.445 --> 11:54.046
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I don't sail that to alarm you.
11:54.906 --> 11:58.967
[SPEAKER_00]: I say it to enlighten you and several of you know that already.
11:59.127 --> 12:05.389
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure and you could probably enlighten me and I welcome that.
12:06.990 --> 12:10.070
[SPEAKER_00]: But it wasn't something that I realized until recently.
12:10.130 --> 12:11.691
[SPEAKER_00]: I just kind of assumed that
12:12.632 --> 12:18.436
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the same things we had today, if we had them 20 to 30 years ago, I must be made the same way, right?
12:18.916 --> 12:20.057
[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, I'm Coach Chijay.
12:20.877 --> 12:26.021
[SPEAKER_00]: Look, I know what it's like to feel like you're stuck in a routine with no way out.
12:27.222 --> 12:34.306
[SPEAKER_00]: Took me a long time and a lot of personal development to get to the point where I had to courage to change that.
12:34.786 --> 12:36.247
[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm so glad that I did.
12:37.248 --> 12:40.070
[SPEAKER_00]: And look, you can make that change too with my help.
12:41.215 --> 12:43.576
[SPEAKER_00]: Your next step is to click the link below.
12:44.357 --> 12:54.722
[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to take you to a short form where you can enter your contact info and answer a few questions, and then it will send you to my calendar so that you can pick a time for you and me to get out of call.
12:55.930 --> 12:57.251
[SPEAKER_00]: I look forward to talking with you.
12:57.711 --> 13:19.228
[SPEAKER_00]: So here's what I wanted to share with you guys that I'm excited about is that there are definitely ways that you can help your body so that you can, if not live longer, live with more purpose, more energy, and to look and feel younger.
13:24.532 --> 13:32.097
[SPEAKER_00]: relearned about longevity and ways that we can help our body to be more healthy.
13:32.677 --> 13:38.621
[SPEAKER_00]: You probably heard things like co-cute 10 and vitamin C, vitamin D.
13:41.943 --> 13:58.232
[SPEAKER_00]: Vitamin B12 or B complex, all are things that can help our bodies to fight off oxidative stress and things that just naturally because of our environment bring us down.
13:58.832 --> 14:09.458
[SPEAKER_00]: So I highly recommend you looking into some quality vitamins and minerals that can help with that and
14:10.543 --> 14:12.624
[SPEAKER_00]: See, what a fact it has on you.
14:12.785 --> 14:16.267
[SPEAKER_00]: See if it doesn't make you look and feel younger.
14:16.707 --> 14:25.013
[SPEAKER_00]: There are supplements that I take every day and have been for a decade or more that I know have helped me to be healthier.
14:25.033 --> 14:29.376
[SPEAKER_00]: They study ingredients that are natural products that God put here on earth.
14:30.417 --> 14:39.183
[SPEAKER_00]: Things like vitamins and minerals and stuff that comes from plants and trees that God intended as to use.
14:40.276 --> 14:49.561
[SPEAKER_00]: And those things were abundant in the soil at one time, and we probably didn't need supplements because that supplementary, right?
14:50.981 --> 14:54.903
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we do today, we do because we're not getting it naturally.
14:55.244 --> 15:06.129
[SPEAKER_00]: For many of us, we can try to get what we need for our bodies from foods, and I hope that you will do that and eat healthy.
15:07.028 --> 15:16.072
[SPEAKER_00]: But unless you're in a organic farmer that grows everything yourself and keeps track of what you put in your body, it's probably not enough.
15:16.152 --> 15:19.713
[SPEAKER_00]: And if you are, and that's great, that'd be awesome.
15:20.354 --> 15:28.517
[SPEAKER_00]: But for the rest of us, what we do with our bodies and how we nourish them helps us.
15:29.728 --> 15:44.965
[SPEAKER_00]: Just like the guy in the commercial where he was working out for a specific task, he was using his core to strengthen that stability to build the ability to stand up and move around more.
15:45.986 --> 15:48.870
[SPEAKER_00]: We can strengthen ourselves on the inside also.
15:50.063 --> 15:55.046
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'll throw this in, since I'm a physicist and a scientist, Newton's first law.
15:55.807 --> 16:02.171
[SPEAKER_00]: It's basically the law of inertia that says, a body that's in motion stays in motion, right?
16:02.971 --> 16:07.294
[SPEAKER_00]: Basically, it's a lot easier to keep moving once you've started moving.
16:08.239 --> 16:21.043
[SPEAKER_00]: And when you change your habits to where you're not moving around and you're just sitting and not doing a lot, it becomes more and more difficult to get up and move around.
16:21.363 --> 16:23.603
[SPEAKER_00]: And especially as we get over.
16:24.944 --> 16:33.186
[SPEAKER_00]: So we can either allow ourselves to gradually become less active or we can make the decision to keep moving.
16:33.986 --> 16:35.447
[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't have to be complicated.
16:36.320 --> 16:40.423
[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't mean that you're trying to become a bodybuilder or an athlete.
16:40.603 --> 16:48.068
[SPEAKER_00]: Listen, I am not your fitness coach, but I am trying to motivate you.
16:48.808 --> 17:02.497
[SPEAKER_00]: And in some ways, using your body, what God gave you and taking care of that is an important step towards feeling healthier, being stronger and looking younger.
17:03.661 --> 17:11.365
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm gonna keep doing those things that allow me to help my body because it's important to me.
17:12.226 --> 17:16.948
[SPEAKER_00]: And I encourage each of you to do the same on the inside and the outside.
17:18.709 --> 17:23.152
[SPEAKER_00]: And think about what you want your body to allow you to do.
17:24.432 --> 17:26.053
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it's playing with your grandkids.
17:27.554 --> 17:28.454
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it's hiking.
17:29.555 --> 17:30.696
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe even skiing.
17:31.596 --> 17:32.857
[SPEAKER_00]: Or it could just be traveling.
17:34.452 --> 17:42.796
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it's getting up every morning and just having the strength and the energy to enjoy the life that you have.
17:44.117 --> 17:54.883
[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever it is, start thinking about it now because your body is part of the vehicle that allows you to live out the next chapter of your life.
17:56.463 --> 18:11.987
